How to be a Great Teacher

An ESL job is not an easy job, but also not necessarily difficult. ESL jobs are rather challenging due to many factors, one of which is because you have to always come up with the best ways to teach ESL to your students. There are many elements of the language which you need to teach such as the vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and many more. You need to find the best ways you can teach these to your ESL students so that they will be able to retain the information and produce the target language after the lesson.

It takes a lot to be an ESL teacher, and it still does even when you have become one. This means that you still need to improve in your ESL job, and aim to be the best version of yourself. If you are having trouble with doing that, this article will hopefully give an idea of what you can do in order to improve in your ESL job.

Be confident

Your teaching skills can never improve properly if you do not have confidence in the first place. This should always come before you look for the best ways to deliver your lesson, or search for fun materials for your lesson. You are going to walk into an ESL classroom and stand before your students. You are going to teach English to them because it is an important language to master. Therefore, you need to be confident and have faith in yourself, that you have valuable lessons to teach them. This will be one of your greatest tools in facing the challenges of your ESL job.

Be fun

A classroom does not always have to be the most rigid and serious place on earth. The whole point of your lesson is for your students to learn, so you need to make it enjoyable for them. A fun lesson will be more memorable than a boring one. When they have fun during the lesson and enjoy the learning process, they can retain the information better. This is definitely part of your task as an ESL teacher because you have the role to guide them throughout the learning process until they have reached their goal, and you need to do this in every way possible. One of them is creating a fun atmosphere.

There are many ways you can do in order to make your lesson fun, and it all starts from having some lesson or part of the lesson where you just set aside the textbook. Use fun and more unconventional learning materials such as music and even Youtube videos. Have a good balance of fun in your lesson and you will be a step closer to becoming a good ESL teacher.

Be inspiring

One of the highest forms of appreciation for the work you have done as an educator is when your students look up to you and make you their role model. Try your best to be an inspiration to your students by being a good ESL teacher, and even friend. You can do this by trying to take examples from your teachers. Think about your favorite teachers and how they taught you.  Try to do what they did with you and implement that in your classroom.
