The Most Effective Ways in Teaching ESL

It is an amazing opportunity to be able to experience working in another country. For certain jobs, like foreign language teachers, the vacancy is more often than not always available. As we all are aware, English is the global language, making it the most common position available at the market. Being an English teacher in another country comes with its benefits and drawbacks. It can be especially challenging if you are teaching where the language is barely used on a daily basis. The biggest challenge is not only ‘delivering the lesson’, but also making the students understand and achieve the lesson aim.

Despite the challenges and difficulties, ESL teaching can be considered one of the most rewarding jobs because nothing feels better than witnessing the students’ development and knowing that it is the result of the teachers’ hard work. There are, of course, some ways ESL teachers can improve the quality of the lesson and make sure that all the students can grasp the essentials and eventually be able to apply the language. Here are some effective ways to teach your ESL students; hopefully they can make it just a bit easier!

Grammar can be easy!

Grammar is one of the most challenging lessons. The most common factor is how the students keep comparing English grammar to their native language grammar.  Teaching grammar in an old-fashioned way is no longer considered effective. Even though it is important to memorize the formula, the students will still have no idea of when to use which grammatical rules. Instead of drilling the students with grammar formulas, teachers can try giving examples. By doing this, the students will try to relate a grammatical rule to a situation and at the end be able to apply the grammar.

Intermezzo

Learning process is very important, but not always fun. One of the ways to make the learning process more fun is by popping in some intermezzo. As a teacher, you reserve full control of what the intermezzo is. Choosing the right activity and topic can be unexpected by the students and it can help prevent them from yawning. Introducing the students to new things, like trivial fun facts in the middle of the lesson is one of the ways of cheering up the atmosphere. Teachers can also introduce some new games or activities to just make the lesson less rigid. The more frequent teachers apply this trick, the more fun the lesson can be.

Visual Aids

There are statistics which have proven that most people are visual learners, meaning that they study and understand better when given visual materials. These types of people usually take notes with colorful pens and make doodles on their notes to make them understand and remember better. They also prefer materials like maps, diagrams, pictures, videos, etc. Incorporating visuals in the classroom can also help in reducing teacher talking time because teachers can describe everything with visual cues.
