Balancing Screen Time in Online Classroom

Online teaching that has been conducted for about a year now after the pandemic started, as an alternative for kids to keep on learning while being safe at the same time. However, online learning comes with its drawbacks. The amount of screen time rises up to the point where it might give some impacts on their health. Although it is almost impossible to attend a real classroom, there are some ways teachers can add in addition to the online classroom to reduce the screen time and at the same time, enhance the language application.

This article covers several ways to add to teaching routine especially when the students are relatively young.

  1. Adding some games to the lesson
Teachers can jazz up the classroom by conducting some games as a refresher during a learning activity. Teachers can reduce screen time by adding some offline games that can be done at home. For example, if the lesson is about adjectives, teachers can ask the students to find an item at home within 2 minutes and ask the students to describe the characteristics of the item. This is a great way to take a little time away from the screen and at the same time, apply the language when they are describing the item.

  2. Physical exercise
It is advised for teachers to give some break at least 10 minutes for every hour. During this break, teachers can invite the students to do some physical activities to make sure they are moving and refreshed. Teachers can ask the students to do some exercise together, like jumping jacks or arm circles.

  3. Crafts
craft is a great addition to help the students take some time away from the screen during online learning activity. Teachers can ask the students to prepare the craft materials at the previous meeting for this project. If the lesson is about color, teachers can use color by number coloring page and give clues verbally on what color each number is. For example: number one is the color of the grass, number two is the color of a banana, and so on. Students can learn about colors and at the same time, take some time away from the screen.

To sum up, reducing screen time is not only great to reduce the health concerns from constantly staring at the screen; it also is great to make the classroom to be more alive and less boring.
